Ongoing research projects at The Cibolo Nature Center track the effectiveness of land stewardship techniques. We conduct research surveys on:
• Prairie vegetation
• Songbirds
• Insects
• Small mammals
• Fish
• Aquatic invertebrates
In 1998, The CNC Research Group began its principal environmental monitoring project. The goal: To determine the long-term effect of different land management practices.
• The first project was a prairie vegetation survey. After the initial survey, the CNC conducted a controlled prairie burn. We continue to monitor the consequences of this beneficial burn.
• Through the pioneering efforts of our volunteer citizen scientists and The CNC Research Group, in coordination with state and federal agencies, we are able to study the effect of land management practices and conduct scientific surveys of plants, birds, small mammals, insects and reptiles.
• Our research programs develop effective environmental survey techniques which were lacking in this region
• Our research techniques serve as a model of best practices for local landowners who conduct their own surveys.
The CNC also conducts a series of demonstration projects involving wildscapes, composting, prairie management and restoration, marsh restoration, rainwater harvesting and riparian land management.
